OHWOW is pleased to announce It Ain’t Fair 2011: Materialism, to coincide with Art Basel Miami Beach. The 2011 installment of this annual group show, now in its fourth year, takes on a thematic focus: materialism. The exhibition features work by over twenty artists, including: Daniel Arsham, Justin Beal, Anna Betbeze, Ashley Bickerton, Scott Campbell, Peter Coffin, Dan Colen, N. Dash, Sam Falls, Michael Genovese, Luis Gispert, Angel Otero, José Parlá, Sara Rahbar, Ryan Reggiani, Bert Rodriguez, Amanda Ross-Ho, Aurel Schmidt, David Benjamin Sherry, Lucien Smith, Agathe Snow, Jessica Stockholder, Nick van Woert, and Aaron Young, including a special, live performance by New York-based artist Michael David Quattlebaum, Jr., during the opening reception.

VISITING ARTIST MICHAEL GENOVESE

The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum at Florida International University presents its first Visiting Artist Program featuring Michael Genovese with P.S. (2008-2012). P.S. is a process-focused project, that has taken place in Florida, Texas, California and Illinois, that collects the spirit and attitude of Americans. In this iteration of the project, students are invited to carve their thoughts, views and ideas into blank surfaces placed in social spaces throughout the university’s campuses. These reflections and ruminations capture the essence of the individual, community, and university as a whole. This unedited information, which mirrors a range of perspectives during a time of change, are studied in content, form and function as a starting point for the creation of new work by Genovese.

With our diverse university community and in conjunction with FIU’s Worlds Ahead initiative, the project seeks to engage the university and outside community through this highly collaborative project. The artist will work with groups, acting as a mentor, facilitator, and collaborator. The project will include plates, quotes, and documentation from previous locations. It will pose questions about contemporary American issues that are rooted in art, history, and the social sciences. The lectures will also address the process of art making in today’s information filled landscape, emphasizing on cognitive human experience and its merge with industry and technology. Other topics will include the artist’s role in contemporary society, its post-war history and future.

The solo exhibition scheduled for April 12, 2012 at the Patricia and Phillip Frost Art Museum will be a survey of objects and experiences stemming from the experience. It will address aesthetic concerns as well as pose questions about the artist’s continuing practice in the transformation of the objective to the subjective and it’s value.

ABOUT THE VISITING ARTIST PROGRAM

The Visiting Artist Program at The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum at Florida International University is designed to foster community engagement and inter-disciplinary approaches to ideas. The program provides the museum and university’s support and resources for the development of work during the visitors stay. Programs include Community outreach, on-campus collaborations and an exhibition that surveys the work created during the program.

ABOUT THE FROST ART MUSEUM

Housed on the University Park campus of Florida International University, The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum (formerly The Art Museum at FIU) opened in 1977. Initially a small gallery of less than 3000 square feet, the Museum grew to achieve national and international recognition as one of South Florida’s key cultural institutions. The Frost Art Museum’s extraordinary programmatic growth during the 1980s and 1990s, qualified the Museum for designation as a Major Cultural Institution by both the State of Florida and Miami-Dade County. Grants from both sources, complimented by endowments, membership and private and corporate giving, provide stable funding for annual programs. In 1999, the Museum received accreditation from the American Associations of Museums (AAM) and in 2001 became an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution.

The Museum’s growing collection has several notable donations of important groups of work. In 1989, the FIU leadership and the board of the Metropolitan Museum and Art Center in Coral Gables, ensured the intact survival of this important collection by transferring its ownership to the Frost Art Museum when the private museum closed.

The Frost Art Museum complements its exhibitions with a wide range of regionally unique and nationally recognized educational programs. The Steven and Dorothea Green Critics’ Lecture Series and the Latin American & Caribbean Art Lecture Series directly connect South Florida’s audiences with important artists, critics and art historians living today. The Wednesday After-Hours programming is designed to complement the Museum’s exhibitions and give visitors the chance to engage with the contemporary and confront the controversial via gallery talks, films, live music and performance art.

Waveland and Troy, 2009, is a minimalist sculpture based, to begin with, on memory. Inspired by a resourceful solution to standard fence fabrication, of decades ago, wherein plumbing pipes connected in a particular configuration were planted on property lines to define one’s territory, the piece serves as memoir to this dated DIY practice, but more aptly as visual symbol translating its intended message.Through the topical treatment of nickel-plating commercially manufactured steel pipes, coupled with their linearly concentrated, symmetrical arrangement, the artist’s literal memory (a “fence” on the corner of Waveland and Troy in Chicago) transforms into an exaggerated expression of space and obstacle, as well as a glorification of convention.

Defying the territorial declaration made by fences, and the distance etiquette expected when engaging with fine art, Construction instruction deconstruction construction, 2009, is a performance video which serves to not only negate the terms of confines, but also to activate a sedentary object, infusing it with history, movement, and experience. This performance took place in front of the artist’s replica of One: Number 31, 1950, a Pollock piece installed during Jackson Pollock 1912-1956 at the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna, Rome, in 1958. Genovese referenced Frederick Kiesler and Peggy Guggenheim’s installation methods to stimulate a conversation about action, and the role of display. The video monitor’s placement on a pedestal continues the dialogue of province and separation. The summation of concept lies in the questioning of boundaries, the enjoyed freedom of crossing them, the impact of presentation, and the cumulative value and resonance that results from interaction.

Michael Genovese is a multimedia artist interested in process, manipulating durable and static materials,
such as metal and wood, to explore ideas of transformation. Release and Let It Go features a capsized
wooden porch, modeled from those characteristically attached to mobile homes, beached and semi-submerged in water (increasingly so as the tide rises throughout the exhibition). First built, burned, and sealed with resin, the presentation of this work is the final chapter in the transformative process informing it, as the bay takes some of the sculpture with it. -LAND

OHWOW is pleased to announce an exhibition of new work by Michael Genovese included in New Work Miami 2010 at the Miami Art Museum. Curated by Peter Boswell, Assistant Director for Programs/Senior Curator, and René Morales, Associate Curator, New Work Miami 2010 provides a partial snapshot of the Miami art scene at this moment, held in the Museum’s recently unified 5,000 square foot Plaza Level Gallery. Genovese presents three new pieces in this exhibition, all of which continue his exploration of cross-cultural/cross-linguistic comparisons.

Fifteen aluminum plates, each with a black, baked enamel finish, are stacked on top of one another to create a pyramidal structure. The plates are marked by graffito – the enamel finish is scratched through, revealing the silver metal beneath it – inscribed by members of the general public who were invited by the artist, without content restriction, to contribute their thoughts. “Shalom in the home,” and “Jesus Saves 20%,” are just two examples from thousands of entries recorded on these surfaces. The sculpture’s overall arrangement is suggestive of a pre-Columbian step pyramid or a ziggurat, but acts instead as a contemporary shrine constructed to commemorate our particular civilization rather than to honor a singular entity.

Tableaux #7.10 and Tableaux #8.10, two nickel-plated aluminum hand-engravings, further Genovese’s interest in archiving social commentary. He transcribes content culled from the graffito panels onto the high-polished plates, in microscopic and illegible text from English, Spanish, and Haitian Creole languages. These pieces silhouette ancient relics, broken in half, signaling another nod to historical relevance and to the chasm that exists between intent and interpretation. The relic’s mirror-like quality amplifies our connection to what is before us – faced with a complicated and indecipherable narrative we must simultaneously confront a reflection of our environment and ourselves.

Michael Genovese’s work operates as a reflection, both in a conceptual context and in a literal sense. This exhibition addresses a range of subjects, from Art History to American culture, pomposity to personal debt. The artist holds up a mirror in order to understand his identity and his role in relation to these subjects, while challenging the viewer to perform the same exercise. How we define ourselves, our choice of expression, the ways we are influenced by what we read and experience, all create cause for reflection and require a measure of humility in doing so.

Genovese’s text engravings on high-polished aluminum panels are simultaneously illegible and painstakingly detailed; they are further evolved reincarnations of pulp and prose. By turning his formerly disregarded mail – unpaid bills, debt collector threats, and legal documents – into sacred objects, he aims to more accurately convey the power of burden. Also among this collection of engravings is a panel cataloging public commentary gathered from a previous project, citing nonsensical quotes like “Tippy-toe on the pooty-side” alongside profound examples: “Our dreams don’t fit on your ballot”. Another engraving plucks sections of cultural essays; from Ralph Ellison’s “Invisible Man” : “You ache with the need to convince yourself that you do exist in the real world…”. Two chrome-plated, twin pieces, present the myth of Narcissus – one in Spanish, the other in French.

“Today, let tomorrow go” is the incomprehensible message on a monochromatic black painting. In each incarnation of the two-dimensional work a reflection is forced, but an obstacle exists – the process of analysis is difficult, uncomfortable, and at times simply impossible. The overall presentation of this work is an appropriation of theories from “Art and the Power of Placement” and a nod to the bygone era of formal gallery settings.

Three large-scale sculptures continue the conversation of obstacle and experience. A porch, missing its home, is preserved like a giant chunk of amber containing the DNA of a tragic history. A bizarre arrangement of ordinary pipes and chains is elevated to grandiose through its nickel-plated treatment. Metal rails are manipulated into a circular formation, grounded with cement footings molded from traffic cones. The motive of this work is also an interactive one; an invitation to flex your agility on a course constructed to humiliate.

Accumulated sheets of paper, in actuality, weigh less than an ounce, yet can resonate the poundage of an anvil. Genovese takes intellectual ideas and gives them anatomy to match significance, while trying to preserve their original integrity. Ten-gauge aluminum panels somehow feel ephemeral, and a hulking wooden sculpture still gives a fragile impression; interpretations change depending on the view.
